Do you have a tattoo? If so, what’s the story behind your ink? If you don’t have a tattoo, what might you consider getting emblazoned on you skin?
I do have a tattoo. It’s on my right butt cheek. Will bought it for me for my 30th birthday. It’s a rose with thorns.
Why on the butt cheek? Well, as an actor, I can’t really be tattooed in any place that would be exposed on stage. You can cover some tattoos with makeup and spray bandages, but it’s not ideal. I figured my derriere was the safest place.
Why a rose with thorns? My first director in professional theatre said to me, “If you want the rose, you have to accept the thorns. As in this business, success comes with pain.” When I was 28, I decided I was going to quit acting and become an admin assistant. I went to Business College. Big mistake. I went back to theatre. I got the tattoo to remind me that there are going to be thorns now and then, but that doesn’t mean I have to throw the rose away.
As soon as I got that tattoo, I immediately wanted to get another one. It’s been seven years, and I still haven’t done it. I don’t take tattoos lightly. Plus, I’ve got to figure out another safe/secret place on my body to get it done. Right now, I think I’ll probably get something to remind me of my dogs after they pass. Or a word, if I can ever figure out what word I want inked on my body forever.
