We made a fantastic discovery last week. There are sour cherry trees in the school yard across the street from our house! Hundreds of ripe cherries, free for the picking, in the middle of the city. How awesome is that!? We picked about thirty pounds of cherries. Will made a batch of sour cherry wine, I made two batches of sour cherry preserves, and baked a sour cherry pie. We are “cherried” out. We shared the discovery with a few friends, and they had their fill, too. And yet, there are still tons of cherries about to drop to the ground. Seriously awesome. I wish all our school yards planted fruit trees.
P.S. If you’ve every wondered where the phrase, “life is like a bowl of cherries,” comes from, apparently it’s from this fantastic little song from the 1930s:
Life is just a bowl of cherries.
Don’t be so serious; life’s too mysterious.
You work, you save, you worry so,
But you can’t take your dough when you go, go, go.
So keep repeating it’s the berries,
The strongest oak must fall,
The sweet things in life, to you were just loaned
So how can you lose what you’ve never owned?
Life is just a bowl of cherries,
So live and laugh at it all.
